Hedland Senior High school (SHS) is seeking to appoint a hardworking and motivated Mathematics Head of Learning Area to join our friendly and supportive team.
Teachers and School Administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that apply in this school.

About the role
We are seeking a dynamic, highly competent, and enthusiastic Head of Learning Area (HoLA) – Mathematics. Applicants with an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Mathematics curriculum and the experience and ability to teach courses across Years 7-12 are encouraged to apply.
You will continue to build and develop the mathematics learning area, developing a culture of high-quality teaching and learning. You will lead the implementation of a coherent curriculum, instruction and assessment in line with our school mission, vision and values. The HoLA – Mathematics maintains high expectations for student learning, promotes academic success, love of learning and healthy sense of self. You will promote effective, responsive pedagogy appropriate to children’s learning and development needs.
The HoLA – Mathematics leads the development of instructional practice that is intellectually challenging, authentic to student experiences, recognises student strengths, and is differentiated and personalised. You ensure students are engaged in using technology effectively, employ valid and appropriate assessments and lead the use assessment data appropriately to monitor and improve student learning.
As HoLA – Mathematics builds and maintains a positive, engaging, safe, caring, and healthy environment that meets the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of each student. You will ensure each student is known, accepted, valued, trusted, respected, catered for, and encouraged to be active and responsible in the school community.
You will have high standards of professionalism and will embrace opportunities for collaboration within the school community, the wider community in Hedland, and across networks.
The successful applicant will join our collaborate and enthusiastic Senior Leadership Team in leading strategic direction of the school.

You lead a focus on students and are accountable for their learning outcomes. You ensure fair, respectful, and culturally appropriate relationships are built with students in interactions, decision-making and practice. You recognise and leverage student diversity in teaching and learning and promote democracy, individual freedom and responsibility, equity, social justice, community.
As an expert practitioner, you can manage and monitor operations and administrative systems, strategically manage staff resources and scheduling to optimise our professional capacity. You are autonomous and seek, acquire, and manage fiscal, physical, and other resources with the student’s needs at the centre of all decision-making.

- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
