Girrawheen Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to appoint a highly competent and dedicated Head of Department (HOD) – Mathematics to join our friendly and supportive leadership team.
The successful applicant should work collaboratively with the leadership team to lead the priorities of the school business plan. You will ideally have strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills and actively participate in professional learning opportunities. In this role, the successful applicant should model commitment to whole school approaches and expectations of Girrawheen SHS’s Teaching and Learning Framework and develop staff skills and knowledge using an evidence-based approach to teaching through data analysis and self-reflection.
This leadership role will require you to work effectively within the Mathematics learning area to implement innovative approaches to improve outcomes for both high and low ability students. The successful applicant should contribute to the development and review of The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) teaching and learning strategies through collaborative planning and participative decision making. Reviewing and further developing teaching and learning processes to lift student achievement and student success is a key focus of this role. As well as the passion to improve student engagement and achievement, you will ideally have strong classroom management practices and the ability to establish positive relationships with students and parents. Supporting staff to develop their teaching and engagement strategies is a key aspect of the role.
The successful applicant will ideally possess an excellent understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum, Assessment, and Reporting requirements for Years 7 to 12 in Mathematics. The ability to teach Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) Mathematics courses will be highly regarded. This knowledge, combined with pedagogical skills, should enable the development of programs differentiated for the specific learning needs of all students across a full range of abilities. You will also ideally possess the capacity to lead and evaluate moderation activities that ensure consistent and comparable judgements of student learning to meet curriculum and school or system requirements.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
