Woodvale Secondary College (SC) is seeking a proactive leader to join the leadership team of a school that is committed to constant improvement. Applicants with an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) curriculum and the experience and ability to teach courses across Years 7-12 are encouraged to apply.

As Head of Learning Area (HoLA) you will continue to build and develop the HaSS learning area, developing a culture of high-quality teaching and learning. The ability to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice and team performance is an important aspect of the role. Another key attribute is the ability to create environments conducive to learning and provide educational opportunities that are purposeful and relevant, catering for different student learning needs.

The successful applicant should possess excellent interpersonal skills and provide effective and distributed leadership within the learning area. They should be committed to promoting and fostering academic aspiration and engagement, in an environment where achievement is celebrated. Working collaboratively with your team, you will implement whole school policies, processes, and procedures, embedding a culture of professional leadership, trust, and ongoing improvement for all our students and staff.

As an expert practitioner, the HoLA should ideally have an excellent understanding of data analysis and skills in evidence-based planning to improve student learning. They should have a commitment to improved results for all students, in a planned and strategic manner. They will ideally utilise their high-level data literacy skills and monitoring processes to support all students.

Woodvale SC is at the forefront of the use of technology in public schools. The successful applicant will have well developed information and communication technology skills and the capacity to integrate ICT into the curriculum. They will also have the ability to lead teachers in the application of a range of teaching practices to develop student 21st Century learning skills.

Woodvale SC has formed an Independent Public-School cluster with its local area intake primary schools.  As a result, it is essential that successful applicants embrace this cluster approach and the opportunities it provides to work in collaboration with colleagues in each of the schools.

Located some 20 kilometres north of the city of Perth, Woodvale SC has approximately 1400 students from Years 7 to 12.  The College enjoys the expertise of highly trained staff and the stability of small staff turnover.  In recent years the College has provided many nominations for the WA Education Awards.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g., Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; 
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
