Alkimos College is seeking to appoint a Program Coordinator – Gifted and Talented with the experience, dedication and drive, to develop a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly effective and empowered individual to join our growing leadership team. This position provides a unique opportunity to continue to build and develop the Gifted and Talented Academic Selective Entrance Program, and we are therefore seeking applicants ideally with demonstrated leadership success.
As the Program Coordinator – Gifted and Talented, you will be a key member of the college leadership team. In collaboration with the Principal and members of the leadership team, you will provide educational leadership in the college and the community, by developing and promoting the college vision and values. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with their Associate Principal executive line manager, to ensure that the academic and pastoral care needs of students involved in the program are consistently met to a very high standard.
As the successful applicant you will display the professional knowledge, organisational skills and high-level communication skills to build effective relationships with staff, students, parents/carers and the community. You will be a passionate, expert classroom practitioner who displays an understanding of the needs of gifted and talented teaching and learning. You will have strong skills in curriculum development in one of the MESH learning areas (Mathematics, English, Science or Humanities and Social Sciences), with authentic differentiation to ensure high level outcomes for academically gifted students. In addition, you will have the ability and skill set to build the capacity of the GAT and Academic Extension Program teachers to deliver high quality teaching and learning programs. You will have strong knowledge of instructional intelligence, higher order thinking skills, project based learning and critical and creative thinking. Ideally, you will have experience in working with twice exceptional (2e) students, with specific skills in supporting these students and building teacher capacity around individual learning needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

As Program Coordinator – Gifted and Talented, you will have experience, knowledge and passion for gifted education. Your creativity in supporting gifted and talented learners will enable you to build on the current Year 7 program in Semester 2, 2022 and then expand each subsequent year as GAT is delivered into Years 7-10. Within the role you will also oversee the college based Academic Extension Program – Alpha and Aspire class sets in each year group. You will support staff, where applicable, with targeted professional learning and develop partnerships with external agencies to provide enrichment opportunities for students within these programs. Applicants that have completed the Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) modules and/or a Graduate Certificate of Gifted Education and have the capacity to deliver these programs to other staff involved in teaching the program, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Specifically, you will:
- Lead the college GAT Program
- Lead and sustain a GAT teaching culture defined by best practice curriculum design and delivery, instructional strategies, and assessment strategies
- Work collaboratively with other college leaders to ensure the development and articulation of a college wide response to the teaching and learning needs of GAT students
- Provide ongoing strategic data analysis to track performance and identify areas of strength and development within the GAT Program
- Ensure appropriate and timely individualised student enrichment and differentiation
- Work alongside the Associate Principal to manage the GAT Program and the college based Academic Extension Program
- Work collaboratively with Student Services, college leaders and specialised staff as applicable, to ensure the college’s policies and practices are informed by an appreciation of the particular social and emotional needs of GAT students
- Build and maintain productive partnerships with GAT and academic extension students, parents/carers
- Proactively explore opportunities and build networks to enhance the outcomes for GAT and academic extension students
Please note that a teaching load of up to 0.6FTE will be required, dependent on college needs. This may reduce as additional cohorts join the program in subsequent years.
Located in the northern suburb of Alkimos with sweeping ocean views, Alkimos College opened in 2020 with our foundation Year 7 cohort of 176 students, providing local intake area students with access to an exceptional secondary education in world-class learning facilities. Each year we will add an additional cohort, until we reach our full complement of Year 7 -12 in 2025.
Stage 1 buildings include administration, student services, library, gymnasium, staff fitness centre, food studios, cafeteria, technologies, general classrooms, specialist science laboratories, nature play area and the Specialised Autism Program classroom and Homeroom. Shared oval and community facilities with the City of Wanneroo are available via the adjacent Halesworth Park precinct.
Stage 2 (ready for 2024) will include a performing arts centre, dance studio, media studio, music studio, lecture theatre, additional student services and general classrooms.
The college places a high priority on professional learning, with a focus on a whole of college instructional framework as part of our ‘Alkimos Approach.’ A commitment to self-reflection and growth is vital. The college uses a coaching framework for all planning, review, performance development and classroom observation and feedback.
Staff are expected to embrace technology and innovation and enhance their skills with technology to improve work practices. Teaching staff are provided with a college iPad for use. The college provides students with a range of devices available to suit the learning required. This includes laptops, iPads, Macs, PCs.
Alkimos College has high expectations of the student cohort to ensure all students are well prepared for their future and have opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to achieve their potential. This is complemented by a strong focus on student engagement and mental health and wellbeing, through our bespoke Anchor Program.
Alkimos College is only one of eight secondary schools chosen to have a Specialised Autism Learning Program. The college also has a strong academic extension pathway and in 2022 commenced the Gifted and Talented Academic Selective Entrance Program.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
