Kelmscott Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative, committed and effective leader as Head of Learning Area (HOLA) - Science to join their leadership team.
As a member of the School Leadership Team, the successful applicant will contribute to the implementation of the school’s Business Plan through participative decision making whilst promoting the school’s vision and strategic directions. You will continually drive improvement by providing proactive leadership that is collaborative, inspiring, and supportive. Leading by example, you will model high aspirations and expectations of staff and students.
The successful applicant should have the ability to lead change and innovation, supported by your capacity to use evidence-based data to inform the decision making to implement innovation within the learning area. You will be responsible for the analysis of performance data related to the science learning area and the development, implementation, and analysis of improvement plans, both strategic and operational. You will be responsible for developing your team of teachers by providing curriculum leadership and working collaboratively to ensure quality teaching is delivered to meet the needs of all students, empowering each individual student to achieve to their full potential.
By undertaking supportive performance management processes, the HOLA will ensure that teachers in their team are developing consistent practices that maximise student learning and engagement. As the successful applicant, you will ideally have experience in leading reflective performance development discussions with staff, based on a comprehensive knowledge of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This may be through coaching, developing an ethos of teacher self-reflection, feedback, data analysis and a review of formative assessment practices. Facilitating the implementation of instructional intelligences, classroom observation and collaboration as both a leader and a participant, you will also model highly reflective practices as an instructional leader.
The successful applicant should possess current experience in the planning, development and delivery of science-based Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses. Experience in teaching ATAR courses in Chemistry, Physics and Psychology would be desirable. As HOLA Science, you will play a significant role in marketing the school to the wider community by leading initiatives and the successful achievements of students as demonstrated through systemic priorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Kelmscott SHS is a school of opportunity for students offering Department of Education endorsed Specialist Programs in Agriculture and Music, Gifted & Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program and a range of Kelmscott Extension Programs (KEP) in Mathematics, Science, English and Humanities & Social Sciences. We are only one of two schools to provide Gifted & Talented online to rural areas. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
