South East Metropolitan Language Development Centre (SEMLDC) is looking to establish a pool of dedicated Speech and Language Officers for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2022 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022 school year.
Suitable applicants will provide specialised speech and language services to support students with speech, language and literacy impairments. You will ideally have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively prepare and maintain student speech and language/literacy records and reports and communicate student progress to teachers, family and other stake holders.
As a Speech and Language Officer, you will be required to work well in a team environment and be able to collaborate well with schools, internal and external service providers regarding language/literacy programs and service provision. In this role you will also be expected to participate in professional learning activities and liaise with organisations and research institutions to maintain and develop professional, up to date skills.
SEMLDC is an early childhood, special education setting requiring the staff to have extensive experience, expertise and knowledge in the area of Developmental Language Disorder and its impact on student learning and social emotional wellbeing. Suitable applicants will ideally have knowledge and experience in administering and analysing specific school based and standardised oral language assessments and making the appropriate learning adjustments to developing individual education plans. Staff, develop and provide professional learning to mainstream teachers in the area of Developmental Language Disorder, work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and report to interagency and outside professionals. Staff use a range of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) across the curriculum to meet the learning needs of students with speech and language difficulties, along with strong behaviour management skills and the ability to develop and implement individual behaviour plans for students with extreme self-regulation difficulties.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Ability to provide specialised speech and language services and support to students with speech and language impairments and knowledge of the latest trends and research in speech and language development
- Ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students’ progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs
- Ability to plan, implement, monitor and review speech and language programs
- Well-developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports

ELIGIBILITY & TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) qualification and eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
