The Teacher – Literacy and Numeracy (LN) Specialist will work with the Deputy Principal leading the Literacy/Numeracy portfolio and the Curriculum Team Leaders to ensure the College achieves relevant College Business Plan targets.

The LN specialist teacher should ideally have an in depth knowledge of diagnostic testing and intervention programs as well as excellent interpersonal skills and strong curriculum knowledge around whole school literacy and numeracy development.

The LN teacher will provide small group explicit instruction and/or coaching for students at or near significant cut-offs e.g. National Minimum Standards (NMS), Band 8 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) Category 2/3. The LN teacher will also support the coordination of the whole school literacy and numeracy plans and programs as part of the Literacy/Numeracy Site Team ensuring the delivery of the program and data record keeping is in line with College requirements.

Specific tasks include:

  • Identification of students who require additional literacy and/or numeracy support to achieve NAPLAN and /or OLNA success
  • Coordination and small group teaching of students (1) at or near significant NAPLAN and OLNA cut off points; and (2) who have not yet reached OLNA category 3.
  • The development of a coordinated plan to support teachers across the College to apply identified literacy and numeracy strategies to improve student learning outcomes
  • Liaising with the Learning Support Coordinator to provide adjustments for Students at Educational Risk (SAER)
  • Supporting teachers with programs, including: Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT), Education Perfect and OLNA WA

Other tasks as directed by the Principal.

The successful applicant should be student and relationship focused, enthusiastic, innovative and motivated, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. You will ideally engage in ongoing self-reflection and assess the effectiveness of teaching practice to create an environment conducive to learning and facilitate educational opportunities which provide purposeful and relevant learning experiences. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment will be well regarded, as well as a willingness to engage in professional learning and liaise with colleagues, parents and external networks to establish strong community partnerships.

The successful applicant should exhibit a capacity to provide effective collegiate planning with teachers and students to ensure targeted literacy and or numeracy support to achieve NAPLAN and or OLNA success. They should be able to show a high level of interpersonal skills that highlight the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with teachers and students to achieve relevant Business Plan targets around NAPLAN/OLNA and should be able to support their peers in the effective implementation of teaching and engagement strategies to support students to achieve NAPLAN /OLNA success.

A high level of data literacy and knowledge of diagnostic testing and intervention programs to support students to achieve NAPLAN/OLNA success is highly desirable. The successful applicant will also need the ability to guide curriculum development and teaching pedagogy to meet the literacy and numeracy needs of individual secondary students – including knowledge and practice of diagnostic assessments and development of appropriate personalised learning plans for students.

We use the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) instructional system as the catalyst for developing a school culture that closes the expectation and opportunity gaps many students face, ensuring that all students achieve personal success in their learning and preparing all students for success in a global society. All staff are expected to embrace AVID as part of their instructional practice.

This position will have a 0.8 FTE teaching component around small groups and/or a literacy and numeracy classroom teaching role.

Whole School Literacy/Numeracy Secondary or Primary School teachers are encouraged to apply.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
