Braeside Primary School (PS) is seeking a dedicated and committed Special Needs Education Assistant to join our team to support our students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs, you will support the Department’s main objective of teaching and learning of students through assisting the teacher in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. You will provide feedback when required on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education.
The successful applicant will ensure classroom and school community level support is provided to ensure the learning environment is inclusive and relevant, appropriately resourced and maintained, with the health and safety of students a high priority. To be successful in this role, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with staff and external agencies to create supportive and inclusive learning environments.
As an Education Assistant – Special Needs, your role will be implementation of these valuable programs. Our PBS and Visible Learning programs are a whole school approach to student engagement through an intentional approach to academic and social Well-being.
Effective relationships and partnerships which promote positive outcomes for students are central to everything we do. We are seeking applicants with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, which underpin professional and positive working relationships with students, staff, parents and the wider community. With effective interpersonal skills, we will work together to achieve the best educational outcomes for our students.
Our pastoral care program includes a range of programs that target values and skills including; Zones of Regulation, Aussie Optimism and Positive Behaviour Support. A collaborative team approach will ensure individualised and targeted intervention, through case management and withdrawal programs.
Braeside is situated in the town of Katanning, in the central great southern region of WA. With a population of approximately 4 500, Katanning is the centre of a successful grain and sheep farming area.
Students enjoy a safe and secure learning environment. Extensive play areas, surrounded by natural bush settings, are enhanced with new playground equipment and soft fall landing. A purpose built library, dedicated Art and Music rooms, as well as access to computers in each classroom and library complete a well-resourced school.
Respect is highly valued at Braeside PS and many programs and incentives are used to promote it throughout the school year.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
