Merriwa Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking a hardworking, collaborative and supportive individual to join the leadership team in the role of Associate Principal. In collaboration with the Principal, the Associate Principal provides educational leadership in curriculum and student services in the school and wider community, by promoting the school’s vision, and leading a culture of well-being for staff and students.
We are seeking an individual who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of students with disabilities. Knowledge and expertise in working with a range of disabilities, not limited to Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Global Development Delay, Cerebral Palsy and various medical needs which require PEG feeding are highly advantageous to this role.
As the Associate Principal of Merriwa ESC, you will possess a high level of interpersonal skills enabling you to build professional relationships with staff to model and promote a culture of professional performance, providing mentoring and coaching where appropriate. Your interpersonal skills will also be utilised to build partnerships with parents, therapists and within networks and the wider school community.
The Associate Principal will collaborate with the Principal to manage curriculum leadership across the school. This will include working closely with staff to ensure consistent, collaborative practices in teaching and learning. A key role will be to drive whole school priorities, including Alternative, Augmentative Communication, and the implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum within a cross-curricular context to enhance learning. Professional knowledge and utilisation of Abilities Based Learning Education (ABLEWA), Special Education Needs Assessment Tool (SENAT), SEN planning and online reporting tools is a highly desirable component of this role.
Knowledge and experience with Western Australian Curriculum, Kindy Guidelines, Early Years Framework and purposeful play-based learning are highly desirable in order to facilitate our whole school curriculum practices in numeracy, literacy and communication. Experience with the use of Team Teach, Applied Behaviour Analysis, TEACCH and strong behaviour management skills are important for successful teaching practices at Merriwa ESC. You will work collaboratively with colleagues in team planning and curriculum policy development.
The successful applicant will also ideally have skills and experiences in the area of student services, providing an effective case management approach to supporting students with diverse needs and disabilities. This will include liaising with external providers as well as working with the SEN education assistants to ensure the academic, behavioural and social emotional needs of our students are met and that they are given authentic opportunities to achieve realistic goals.
Our teaching and support staff are experienced, dedicated and committed to ensuring each child is a successful student. We have high expectations of our students and drive continuous improvement through the adoption of innovative, effective and evidence based teaching strategies.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
