Opportunities within WorkSafe at DEMIRS
We often have short term vacancies while our employees take a period of leave, are deployed elsewhere in the department or are seconded to other departments in the public sector. We also regularly need people to work on projects with funding for a finite period or to meet the short term needs of a branch when workload is high.
Our short term opportunities may be full time or part time and may be in a wide range of roles from administration, customer service, compliance, investigation, and information technology. Work locations vary, some vacancies are mainly based in Perth and some in our regional offices.
What does WorkSafe do?
WorkSafe drives workplace change in WA through education, specialist advice and enforcement. This includes work health and safety compliance in the mining and general industries sectors, and safety compliance for dangerous goods, as well as regulating major hazard facilities and petroleum operations within the state.

The possible opportunities
We currently have a mixed variety of potential opportunities for you to register your interest.
Inspectors and Senior Inspectors – General Industries and Specialist Teams
You will work in an industry team or a specialist team and carry out workplace inspections, investigations, enforce Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws and providing advice on WHS requirements. When WHS laws are breached, you will investigate complex workplace incidents or accidents. By enforcing WHS legislation and providing advice and information, you will be making a huge difference to the health and safety of the community in Western Australia.
Please note that for industry teams, relevant industry experience (in the industry or industries the team works with, e.g. construction) and knowledge and practical application of WHS is preferred. For specialist teams, knowledge and qualifications relating to the specialist area (e.g. asbestos/occupational hygiene, plant and engineering, ergonomics and/or psychosocial/mental health) is required.
Inspector/Investigators and Senior Inspector/Investigators - Investigations
You will conduct investigations into fatal and serious incidents, interpret and apply legislation and policy, collect and appraise evidence for legal proceedings and criminal prosecutions, and produce high quality investigative written material. Using best practice and contemporary investigative techniques, you will conduct interviews, collect evidence and assess possible breaches of WHS laws consistent with WorkSafe’s procedures and policies. Your keen eye for detail and proficiency in preparing briefs of evidence will enable matters to be prosecuted in the relevant Courts or preparing reports recommending safety outcomes.
Please note that for inspector/investigator roles, knowledge and experience in conducting complex and sensitive investigations and/or demonstrated practical experience in the application of WHS legislation or equivalent is required.
Inspectors of Mines
As an Inspector of Mines, you will conduct sensitive, high-level inspectorate activities aligned with the Directorate’s programs and policies. This may include preparing investigation and prosecution reports. You will drive and champion the implementation and engagement of safety reform, continuous improvement and change management approaches. You will liaise with employers, employees, unions and industry organisations to develop and maintain effective working relationships and secure commitment to WorkSafe’s objectives.
Please note that a tertiary/vocational/trade qualification in a relevant engineering discipline including electrical, mechanical, mining technician, OSH, mining engineer, geotechnical engineer, process engineer, structural engineer, mental health and wellbeing is required for these inspector roles.
Dangerous Goods Officer
As a Dangerous Goods Officer, you will work collaboratively in a team of dedicated safety officers to positively influence the community’s safety from dangerous goods and explosives risks across Western Australia. You will be responsible for a diverse range of activities, including site inspections, compliance assessments, conducting investigations, collecting, and analysing accident information, undertaking enforcement, and implementing processes to prevent harm.
Safety Education Officer
You will form part of a multi-disciplinary team of communication experts who create publications and resources used across WA workplaces to keep people healthy and safe. You will engage with industry and the wider community through a variety of publications to share knowledge and contribute to improving health and safety within workplaces across WA.
Principal Advisor
As a Principal Advisor, you will support legislative change arising from the national harmonisation of safety legislation and facilitate a risk-based approach across dangerous goods, explosives, petroleum, and major hazards facilities. This role will lead and manage the development of policies and strategies to effectively implement the petroleum and Dangerous Goods safety legislations. You will lead the implementation and engagement of safety reforms, continuous improvements and change managements approaches.
Please note that a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering within a related discipline is mandatory to fulfill this position.
Business Support Officer
You will provide assistance and business support for WorkSafe’s compliance activities. As a Business Support Officer, you will provide administrative support for meetings, coordinate events, process data and assist in purchasing, paying invoices and reconciling credit card statements.
