2023 Local Government Ordinary Elections - Casual Employment

If the answer is yes, have you thought about working as a Returning Officer?
The Western Australian Electoral Commission is seeking motivated Returning Officers to run the local government elections in October 2023 across metropolitan Perth and regional WA. This important paid role and the skills you bring will help make election day possible in your local area. Previous experience working on elections is desirable but not necessary as full training and support will be provided.
In order to apply please complete and submit the Expression of Interest (EOI) form, plus a statement of up to one A4 page outlining your relevant skills and experience using examples, along with your resume by 3:00 PM Friday 26 May 2023.
Successful applicants will be contacted in early June and if contracted will begin onboarding and training in early August 2023. The election process commences in early September 2023 and depending on the outcome of candidate nominations, employment will continue into October 2023 with the election and post-election activities in November 2023.
Please note, hours of work can be flexible to accommodate other commitments (work and personal) that applicants may have.
DUTIES INCLUDE
- Working with your assigned local government
- Receiving election candidate nominations and inputting data
- Conducting the ballot paper draw and ballot paper count
- Declaration of results
- Supervision and training of the Temporary Election Workforce at your location
- General election activities as required
REMUNERATION
The remuneration for Returning Officers is on a set fee basis at a Public Sector Agreement Level 4 rate at $47.06 per hour plus 25% casual loading. The hours of work will vary depending on the scale of the election and will be confirmed if you are successful.
OTHER CONDITIONS
You will need to have no active or official involvement with any candidate, political party or election campaign committee to undertake this role.
If successful and you have current employment in the public sector, you would need to seek approval from your current employer to undertake this short-term casual work.
ASSESSMENT
Please complete the EOI form in the online application and include your statement and resume as detailed above to ensure that your skills and experience can be assessed against the position requirements. Following that, the Commission may contact you when vacancies need to be filled.
Please note that staff are appointed on a casual, as needed basis, and employment does not continue from one electoral event to another. This arrangement can be worked around existing employment commitments.
