The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) is responsible for planning and managing land and heritage for all West Australians – now and into the future.

As the Assistant Curator you will seek to create opportunities to enable the sustainable care of the Collection through preserving, managing and researching the Collection for the benefit of communities and future generations. You will achieve this while respecting our past, learning from our stories, and respecting the balance of historic and cultural heritage and the natural environment.
This role is responsible for the provision of contemporary, responsive and fit for purpose curatorial activities, supporting the Curator and Heritage Conservation Manager to achieve the Department’s goals. Successful outcomes include the efficient and effective care, monitoring, management and documentation of Fremantle Prison’s collection, heritage fabric and the collection database. Flexibility to respond to variable work demands and availability to work outside of traditional business hours may be required.
We currently have one (1) fixed term appointment for up to six (6) months, with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. This is a part-time appointment at 15 hours per week.
Suitable applicants may be considered for appointment to similar (permanent, fixed term, full-time or part-time) vacancies for a period of twelve (12) months.

To be successful in this role, you need to demonstrate;
- Demonstrated experience in object conservation and museum practice, including object handling, maintenance of exhibition spaces and collection storage, and use of collection management databases.
- Relevant experience in cultural heritage, including an understanding of current and emerging trends in the field of conservation and heritage fabric.
- Ability to effectively undertake research, analysis and interpretation of multiple information sources to inform and generate written reports, object documentation, presentations and other documentation, in written and verbal formats.
- Experience in effective stakeholder management and engagement.
Competencies outlined in the Public-Sector Capability Profile for Level 3 are applicable to this role i.e. shapes and manages strategy; achieves results; builds productive relationships; exemplifies personal integrity and self-awareness; communicates and influences effectively.
