Byford Secondary College (SC) is seeking to appoint a Teacher - Literacy - English - Humanities and Social Science to deliver a specialist Learning Support program to students in Years 7 and 8. The program has been developed over the past two years and involves selected students who require literacy and numeracy support (LNS) taught by two teachers for MESH subjects. The teacher will work as part of the LNS team with the College’s Learning Support Coordinator to provide an evidence-based teaching and learning program in English - Humanities to address identified needs. The program also provides scope for a cross-curricular approach to curriculum delivery and assessment. Teachers will be provided with opportunities to develop high level teaching skills in the area of curriculum support. Ideally, students in the program will transition to main stream classes.
The successful applicant for this position will be student and relationship focused, enthusiastic, innovative and motivated, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. They will ideally possess the professional knowledge, understandings and experience to analyse data, differentiate curriculum and develop student resilience and confidence in learning. The teacher will liaise with the relevant Heads of Learning and the Learning Support Manager to develop appropriate teaching programs for the LNS classes. Ideally, applicants will have a strong interest in data analysis and the development of targeted interventions. The following skills and attributes are highly desirable:
- The ability to establish and maintain strong, supportive relationships with the students and their families.
- Ability to work in a team and collaborate with other staff.
- Experience in remedial literacy education
- Excellent data analysis skills to support the monitoring of student progress.
- Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, diagnostic testing.
- Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, standardised testing, particularly the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT).
- Excellent behaviour management skills.
The successful applicant will engage in ongoing self-reflection and assess the effectiveness of teaching practice to create an environment conducive to learning and provide purposeful and relevant experiences that cater for different student learning needs. Applicants should also have a sound understanding of the Western Australian curriculum, with a focus the mastery of literacy skills.
Byford (SC) is an Independent Public School located approximately 30 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Our College provides for the secondary education needs of students from Byford and the surrounding communities, with our current cohort of 1500 Year 7-12 students, Byford SC has also become a focal point for secondary education provision for students with disabilities when in 2017 our inclusion facilities opened. The successful applicant will be required to embrace 21st century learning practices and participate in leading innovation and change to pedagogy. The College offers an academic extension program for students by selection, in partnership with the University of Western Australia. This ‘Aspire’ program provides these students with access to the university's staff and facilities to enhance their learning experience. It would be highly desirable for applicants to possess the ability to effectively differentiate instruction to improve student outcomes and challenge students to achieve at the highest level.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

TRAINING
