Byford Secondary College (SC) is seeking a committed and effective instructional leader to join us in the role of Deputy Principal. This role is pivotal in leading our community commitment to improve student outcomes. Leading our focus on high aspiration for all our students and staff is central to the work that the successful applicant will undertake.
In this role, the Deputy Principal will be able to strategically develop and deploy a range of resources. The successful applicant will be able to show how they have developed themselves and others so that the performance of each person in an educational setting is maximised. Experience attracting, recruiting, developing and deploying staff as a part of an evidence based workforce planning and development process is desirable.
As an experienced school leader who is focussed on the effective use of all physical and human resources to maximise student performance, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate their leadership of the timetabling process in a large Secondary school setting. The role requires an ability to evaluate the evidence available to collaboratively lead our College through the annual requirements of reviewing our curriculum offerings, how we review performance and how best to meet the needs of all our students.
Our College is committed to excellence in teaching, learning leadership, wellbeing and pastoral care so this is reflected in our new Business Plan to be launched in 2020. As a key member of the broader school Leadership Team you will work collaboratively to deliver the strategic intent of the College. Experience in leading the improvement of student performance relates directly to this role. Ideally, the successful applicant will have in-depth understanding of system monitoring tools and how the evidence available is to be used in decision making to lead the Byford SC data assessment, monitoring and evaluation schedule and continually strive to develop the data literacy of your colleagues in this process.
The successful applicant will use their high level knowledge and experience as an instructional leader to ensure that our College continues to develop an effective college-wide instructional framework as well as the instructional capacity of our teaching staff. As the Deputy Principal you will lead a sophisticated performance improvement culture which includes nurturing our staff’s existing commitment to classroom observation and feedback so that they reflect on their own teaching practice with an aim to grow and improve.
You will work closely and collaboratively with the Principal and the rest of the Executive Team to ensure system and school processes are completed in a timely and effective manner ensuring the smooth operation of the school. The successful applicant will ideally be able to demonstrate that they can operate effectively within a focussed and distributive leadership team environment and have the versatility to contribute across any of the Deputy Principals portfolios should it be deemed necessary by the Principal.
Byford SC has a strong focus on ICT and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) which includes an established BYOD program. The successful applicant will be required to embrace 21st century learning practices and participate in leading innovation and change to pedagogy. The College offers an academic extension program for students by selection, in partnership with the University of Western Australia. This ‘Aspire’ program provides these students with access to the university's staff and facilities to enhance their learning experience.

Byford SC is an Independent Public School located on Abernethy Road in Byford approximately 30 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Our College provides for the Secondary education needs of students from Byford and the surrounding communities. Byford SC has become a focal point for Secondary education provision for students with disabilities. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
