The Thornlie Senior High School (SHS) Big Picture Academy is a small, caring and supportive learning community that encourages students to achieve their potential through a portfolio pathway with the approach of ‘one student at a time in a community of learners’.
Our students become responsible and active members of the community through a strong focus on the principles of the Big Picture design for education, encompassing academic excellence, development of social skills, emotional wellbeing, respect and values. We are an academy catering for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 within a large senior high school.
We seek to engage young people in learning through implementing the Big Picture Education design which encourages all students to identify and pursue their interests and passions. We want to prepare our young people for post-school life at university, TAFE or direct entry into employment and we start that by engaging students in the community through internships. We aim to be strongly connected with families through regular learning plan meetings and exhibitions. We have high expectations of each and every student to do the best they can and be the best they can be.
We are looking for teachers who will employ excellent interpersonal skills and be capable of providing high quality learning experiences for all students. To be successful you will have high expectations, a commitment to excellence, use a range of pedagogies and have the ability to establish and maintain a positive and engaging learning environment as well as establishing and maintaining partnerships within the local community. You will be able to work as a collaborative team member and will be committed to the development of student achievement and success.
The Advisory is a small community within the Big Picture Academy and you will work with these students each day. The Advisory teacher’s role is to teach, inspire, provoke, bond, organize and manage learning. You will negotiate student learning plans, convene meetings with students, parents and mentors, help students develop extended projects and prepare for exhibitions. Advisory teachers take responsibility for student learning across the curriculum including literacy and numeracy. You will discover how a philosophy of combining personalized learning and working together - one student at a time in a community of learners - is the key to creating schools where students are engaged in meaningful learning, and where academic progress is measured against real-world standards.
Further to this the ability to develop the numeracy and/or literacy skills of students is highly desirable. The ability to critically analyse NAPLAN and OLNA data and the capacity to incorporate this knowledge into action plans to achieve meaningful student outcomes would also be highly advantageous.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):
- Professional knowledge;
- Professional practice; and
- Professional engagement.
Applications will be assessed against these domains. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.
