Christmas Island District High School (DHS) are seeking to establish a pool of Year 3-6 Teachers for appointments to fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise during the 2020 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2020 school year.

Suitable applicants will be highly professional and possess outstanding interpersonal skills. They will pursue excellence in classroom teaching and provide encouragement and support to their colleagues. To be successful in this position you will be highly organised and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Additionally, you will have knowledge and experience of explicit teaching, the ability to work effectively as part of a team and a commitment to working with parents and the wider community.

Christmas Island DHS is located 360 km southwest of Java and 2 300 km northwest of Perth. We cater for 237 students from Pre-primary to Year 12 on our main site and 20 Kindergarten students at the Tom Patterson Kindergarten Centre. Our team of teachers and education assistants are selected through a rigorous merit selection process.

Our school is well resourced which means class sizes are kept small and extra support is provided to classes in the areas of literacy, numeracy, information and communications technology, and pastoral care. Our commitment to valuing the home languages of the island means that students are offered the opportunity to learn either Mandarin or Bahasa Malay languages.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):

  • Professional practice; and
  • Professional engagement.

Applications will be assessed against these domains. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.

Applicants currently completing the Department of Education Leap program (formerly known as the Switch program) can apply for vacancies using their current or Leap qualification – even if they have not completed the program at the time of applying. Applicants may be appointed to a vacancy based on the qualification being completed via the Leap program.

The Department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and persons from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.
