This is an exciting opportunity to join the Planning and Operations team at the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB). These critical roles are part of our core business and provide sensitive services to the WA community.
MCB is recruiting for a pool of grounds and burials staff to fill vacancies as they become available for the next 12 months at our Karrakatta, Pinnaroo, Fremantle, Midland, Guildford and Rockingham sites.
Applicants may apply for a grounds position, a burials position, or both.
This selection process will be used to fill vacancies in these positions on a full time, part time, short-term or ongoing basis as they arise within the next 12 months.
ABOUT THE JOBS
Cemetery Worker (Grounds) is responsible for the landscaping and maintenance of MCB’s cemetery sites and gardens, which includes:
- Carrying out general maintenance of garden/lawn areas and grounds, ensuring a high standard in horticulture
- Participating in large landscaping projects as directed (cemetery renewal)
- Providing good customer service to MCB clients when required
Cemetery Worker (Burials) is responsible for:
- The safe preparation of grave sites, either manually (using a shovel) or mechanically (using an excavator)
- The safe interment of the deceased in graves, vaults or crypts, and re-instating the site after interment
The roles may also be required to assist other teams with operational activities, or work at any MCB site, as required.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR - WORK RELATED REQUIREMENTS
Both positions have the following work related requirements:
- Knowledge of and ability to undertake safe work practicies using corrrect manual handling techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in performing outdoor physical labour.
- The ability to work in a flexible team environment.
- Sound interpersonal and verbal communication skill, including the ability communicate sensitively and the ability to deliver high standards of customer service.
- Show initiative, self-motivation and the ability to work productively unsupervised.
- Basic level of computer literacy including Microsoft Windows and Internet use.
- Commitment to honest and ethical work practices and behaviour.
- ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence (manual).
Applicants for Cemetery Worker (Grounds) will also need:
- Relevant Trade Certificate e.g. Certificate III in Horticulture, or four years relevant and accumulated experience, and assessed as meeting the job requirements.
- Experience in, or the aptitude to learn, the operation of horticultural machinery and its general maintenance.
Desirable
- Basic knowledge of reticulation operation and maintenance.
- Experience in general maintenance/construction duties e.g. bricklaying, brick paving, grano work, etc.
- MR Driver’s Licence.
Applicants for Cemetery Worker (Burials) will also need:
- An understanding of machinery operation and maintenance.
- National Police Clearance (MCB will organise prior to appointment).
Desirable
- Hold Safety (White Card) and/or First Aid Certificate.
- MR Driver’s Licence.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will be required to disclose if they have been subject to disciplinary proceedings by their employer within the last two years.
The recommended applicant will be required to provide a current National Police Clearance prior to appointment that is less than six months old.
A satisfactory pre-employment medical is a requirement for these positions.
