The Department of Communities brings together the services and functions of disability services, child protection and family support, housing, community initiatives and regional services reform.
The Department of Communities will relocate its head office to the new purpose-built Kings Square, Fremantle. This move is currently scheduled for April 2020.
The Opportunity
The Department of Communities is looking for talented graduates to join our Graduate Development Program commencing in February 2020. Graduates are employed on a fixed term basis for up to 24 months with the possibility of extension(s) and/or permanency.
The program offers:
- challenging and interesting project work, engaging with stakeholders on a wide range of issues. Stakeholders include the community, not for profit organisations, commercial business and other Government agencies from across the sector;
- opportunities to rotate across different work areas within the Department to gain diverse experience and skills. Areas of rotation could include Policy, Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, Contract Management, Children in Care, Business Integration, Responding to a Royal Commission Report, Housing and Commercial Operations;
- a formal learning and development program; and
- support of supervisors, a mentor, fellow graduates and the Graduate Development team.
Who we’re seeking
We are seeking graduates from diverse backgrounds, both academically and demographically, who embrace Communities’ values of Courage, Respect, Empathy, Accountability, Trust and Empowerment.
We are looking for graduates who have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2018 or 2019, or who will complete before January 2020.
We’re interested in a range of disciplines, including but not limited to Economics, Social Impact, Data Analytics, Finance, Human Resources, Business, Arts, Science, Psychology and Law.

We have dedicated positions for graduates with disability. These positions are still within the graduate program and offer additional support that’s tailored to you. This can include advice on applications, reasonable adjustments to the selection process, access to workplace adjustments and flexible work options.
These opportunities are offered in accordance with sections 51 and 66R of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. Aboriginal candidates and candidates with disability who meet the selection criteria will be prioritised for appointment.
The Process
The selection process will commence in September. Eligible applicants will be invited to complete a one-way video interview and applicants shortlisted from that process will be invited to attend an interview.
Referee checks will also be undertaken. Please ensure you nominate referees that are available during the selection process and can comment on your abilities in relation to the selection criteria.
Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments may be made for this or similar future vacancies (fixed term or permanent) that arise within the next 24 months across the Department of Communities.
