About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team in a challenging but rewarding role as a Youth Custodial Officer. If you want a career where you can make a difference, this may be the role for you.
The Youth Custodial Officer is responsible for the contemporary management of, and positive engagement with, young people in the justice system, specifically those detained at Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale. The position has a direct impact on the provision of rehabilitative services available through the Department to young people who have offended. The role considerably influences services that ensure young people are provided opportunities to address their offending behaviour, improve their education and work skills, maintain family links, and prepare for reintegration and release.
About you
The right people for this job are resilient and enjoy working with young people – you may have done this professionally, voluntarily or through your family network or from other experiences. You will work as part of a team with young people in challenging situations where being able to diffuse and manage conflict is paramount.
You will be a positive role model and work with young people and their families who have often experienced significant trauma. You will help create an environment by implementing child safe prinicples into everything you do to ensure young people are safe and encouraged to lead law-abiding, productive lives in a culturally supportive way.
Applicants must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position
Other requirements:
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship
- Current and unrestricted C class drivers licence
- Possess a first aid qualification from an accredited training provider (or be willing to undertake and/or renew necessary accreditation).
All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.

The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. When part of a pool you may be offered a permanent or temporary position, however an appointment is not guaranteed.
This pool will be open for a period of 24 months from the date of first appointment. Permanent, fixed-term, full-time and part-time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise.
