Position Profile: The Midwest Region is seeking a Consultant Physician - General Medicine to join the team based at Geraldton Hospital. The hospital provides a good general case load and duties reflective of a level 1 teaching hospital.
The role encompasses:
- The provision of direct clinical care of patients, especially in acute care and high dependency unit
- Supervision and teaching of the junior medical staff
- Evaluation of quality of care outcomes and the implementation of initiatives to enhance quality
- Provision of general medicine expertise, which extends to leading the junior and senior doctors in the department’s medical team and receiving referrals from other medical practitioners within the Midwest
Leads the multidisciplinary team to provide specialist medical services to patients. Promotes patient safety and quality of care. Provides leadership, orientation, training, supervision and education for doctors in training, Health Service Medical Practitioners and other health workers.
In collaboration with the Head of Department and other Consultants works to achieve national, state and WACHS performance standards and targets. Works within the scope of clinical practice as defined and recommended by Geraldton Hospital Medical Credentialing and Scope of Clinical Practice Committee
Applications are invited from Consultant Physicians - General Medicine with Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent. Demonstrated skills in General Medicine, High Dependency Care and Coronary Care; high-level interpersonal skills with experience in problem solving and conflict resolution; and proven leadership skills in a multidisciplinary team environment are essential selection criteria for the position. It is desirable for applicants to have experience in teaching & research and experience in quality improvement programs.
Area Profile: The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is the largest country health system in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, providing health services to approximately half a million people, including 45,000 Aboriginal people, over a vast two and a half million square kilometre area. The organisation comprises seven regions, with a strong network of public hospitals, health services and health centres located across rural and remote Western Australia. Our core business is the provision of quality, accessible health services to country WA residents and visitors.
Hospital Services: The Geraldton Regional Hospital is a 76 bedded hospital under WA Country Health service (WACHS)-Midwest. This is a secondment hospital in Midwest region with a very busy Emergency and Medical department. This hospital also caters regions like Northampton, Mullewa, Morawa, Three springs and Meekatharra. These regions have small hospitals with service provided by GP.
There are about 30,000 ED presentations per annum and around 3500 admissions via ED. The department of medicine also extend services like renal dialysis unit with12 beds, chemotherapy unit, Oncology centre, palliative care, stroke and Rehabilitation unit, Hospital in the home service (HITH) and Post-acute care service (PACS). The hospital has a 6 bed high dependency unit .The hospital has dedicated Pathology department (Path west), Radiology department with full time Radiologist. The radiology department provide services like X-rays, Ultrasound, CT scan and various radiological procedures. There is a MRI facility supported by Medicare available at St. John of God Hospital which is near to the hospital campus.
