Not just any career. Make a difference in your regional community!
The Department is seeking applications for Prison Officers at the following regional prisons:
- Albany Regional Prison
- Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (Kalgoorlie)
- Greenough Regional Prison (Geraldton)
- West Kimberley Regional Prison (Derby)
As a Prison Officer, you will supervise all aspects of prisoners’ lives in custody. You will be a role model and mentor; a teacher and trainer. You will play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of prisoners, whilst also ensuring the safety of your regional community.
To be successful in the role, you will need to have a common sense approach to the job, and be able to draw on your life experience to handle challenging situations. You will need to be fair and consistent in the way you treat people, and be able to balance your authority with understanding in order to build and maintain good relationships with prisoners. Your awareness of Aboriginal people and their culture will help you to work with a diverse prison population. You will also need to be reasonably fit and healthy in order to safely perform your duties and to respond to incidents.
Prison Officers enjoy fulfilling careers serving the WA community as part of a diverse and inclusive team. It is a role like no other and one of the most rewarding things is knowing that you are helping your community. As a Prison Officer, you can make a positive difference!
The Department is committed to increasing the diversity of its workforce. To help achieve this, Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 applies to this position. Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.
REQUIREMENTS
The following pre-appointment requirements are applicable for Prison Officers with the Department of Justice:
- Australian citizenship, Australian permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship
- A current and unrestricted manual C-Class driver’s licence
- Clearance through the Department’s criminal history and integrity assessment process
- A HLTAID003 Provide First Aid qualification (with nine months validity remaining at the time of appointment).
- Successful completion of all relevant pre-employment medical, fitness, psychological and any other selection assessments as determined by the Department
SELECTION ASSESSMENTS
The selection process is outlined in the attached Applicant Information Booklet. Assessments, such as fitness testing, interviews and medicals, will be held locally in Albany, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Derby throughout October and November 2018. If your application is shortlisted, you will be contacted with further details and dates for assessments in these areas.
Please note that assessments will not be scheduled in Perth for this recruitment campaign. If you are not available to attend various assessments at one of the above regional locations, or your preference is to apply for a position at a metropolitan prison, then you are encouraged to wait and apply when the Department is next recruiting in the metropolitan area.
APPOINTMENT POOL
When the selection process is finalised, recommended applicants will be included in the regional Prison Officer Appointment Pool, from which offers can be made to fill vacancies at Albany, Eastern Goldfields, Greenough and West Kimberley Regional Prisons for a period of up to 24 months, starting from early 2019. A successful application and placement in the Prison Officer Appointment Pool does not guarantee an offer of employment.
TRAINING
All Prison Officers initially complete an 11-week (paid) Entry Level Training Program (ELTP). Where practicable, and depending on vacancy numbers, ELTPs may be delivered locally to cater for regional trainees. Where local training is not feasible, ELTPs will be held at the Corrective Services Academy in Perth, and any travel and accommodation costs for regional (local) employees will be paid for by the Department. Upon completion of the ELTP, successful graduates continue learning on the job, while completing a nationally recognised qualification. After nine months of probation, officers can be recommended for permanency, pending satisfactory performance and attainment of the CSC30115 Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial).
