Position Profile
We are seeking to establish a pool of suitably qualified applicants for the role of Technical Officer. The pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill permanent and fixed term, full time and part time opportunities that may arise in this period. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you placement to a position.
In this role the successful applicant will work across an extensive area of the West Australian rangelands from the Gascoyne coast to the Great Sandy/ Victoria Deserts in the east, south to the Nullarbor Plain and north to the Pilbara. This position offers a balanced mix of field and office work and is ideally suited to someone with an interest in rangelands ecology and the pastoral industry.
Key responsibilities include:
- Being part of a team of officers monitoring the resource condition of the State’s pastoral lands at regional and lease levels
- Providing information and advice to the Commissioner of Soil and Land Conservation (the Commissioner) and the Pastoral Lands Board (PLB) regarding rangeland range condition, issuing of permits, granting of leases and changes to leased areas as required
- Assisting the Commissioner with regulatory activities under the Soil and Land Conservation Act 1949
- Working with pastoral industry and land managers to to improve the profitability and sustainability of the State’s pastoral lands
We are looking for applicants with ability to provide technical support and observe and report on the plants, soil, animal and other environmental factors that determine rangeland condition. The applicant must be prepared to spend extended periods working in remote pastoral locations and have demonstrated effective workplace communication abilities. Knowledge of, or experience in, scientific methods and analytical procedures appropriate to agricultural research and development activities is essential as is in a current Western Australian drivers licence.
