About the role
The Head of Learning Area - Humanities and Social Sciences and Health and Physical Education (HOLA HASS and HPE) provides leadership and support within the HASS and HPE teams.
The successful applicant will be knowledgeable about WACE and WA Curriculum requirements and an effective classroom practitioner. Newman Senior High School (SHS) currently offers HASS and HPE curriculum under the WA Curriculum in Years 7 – 10, General Careers, ATAR History, Certificate II in Sports and Recreation and ATAR Health Studies in Years 11 and 12. Kicking Goals and Shooting Goals programs through VSwans provide an engaging pathway for students, with an emphasis on community development. The school also participates in a number of regional sporting events and HASS related competitions. The Newman community supports the school and provides opportunities for creative approaches to make curriculum come alive in the community.
A focus on developing successful teaching, learning and assessment practices in the context of a regional school, strengthening connections and ensuring the school provides a range of learning opportunities for all students is an integral part of the role.
About us
Newman SHS opened in 1974. The school caters for approximately 300 students in Years 7 to 12. The Newman Way values of Care and Compassion, Respect and Responsibility are central to our school culture. Our vision is to build a distinctive local school which is the Iron Heart of the Pilbara.
The school has high quality buildings and facilities, including a new Quantitative Sciences and Student Services Hub which opened in 2017, and an Engineering/Metals Trade Training Centre. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for fixed term or permanent appointments to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
