Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and aspirational Head of Learning Area (HOLA) – Science.
The successful applicant will ideally demonstrate the ability to provide direction and purpose to staff, build team capacity and cohesion and promote an environment of positive quality learning experiences for all students. Becoming a member of the leadership team is an exciting opportunity to help develop a unique and fist class learning and teaching hub in the Pilbara.
In addition, the HOLA – Science, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, will work collaboratively with the Principal and other members of the school administration team to provide educational leadership in the school and community by developing and promoting the school motto “Together We Achieve”.
The successful applicant will need to have the necessary skills and ability to provide direction and purpose to young staff, some of whom are working outside of their area of expertise. You will ideally have effective communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team. In this role you will be involved in curriculum development in both lower and senior school, staff development and implementation of Western Australian Curriculum. The ideal candidate will be an individual who has high expectations for all students, ideally be able to demonstrate successful strategies that improve student outcomes and understands the importance of an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning to maximising student outcomes.
We are ideally seeking someone with demonstrated high level of content knowledge of the Sciences. The successful candidate will require high level knowledge and application of science concepts required to successfully teach the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry or Biology at or beyond Year 12 ATAR standard. A tertiary qualification in a science discipline is highly desirable but not essential. Experience at supporting staff teaching and delivery ATAR level science courses is highly desirable.
The successful applicant will need to possess the necessary skills and ability to provide direction and leadership across the STEM program at Hedland SHS. A strong focus on developing opportunities that are embed, engaging, enriching and extend opportunities for all students is required. The STEM team work across Learning Areas to design and deliver highly differentiated courses. An understanding of alternative project based learning programs is highly desirable. Delivery of afterschool, extension programs and professional learning will be key components of this position.
Hedland SHS has a number of key partnerships that link directly into this role. Our STEM staff work closely with industry partners, which include BHP Billiton, Roy Hill and FMG plus are well supported by CSIRO, ECU and General Electrics. Our STEM program is well resourced with state of the art equipment and facilities. The successful applicant will need to effectively lead the team and extend the culture of the learning environment. You must be willing to share and build the STEM capacity in others (students and staff alike).

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be appointed to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
