About the Role
The Traffic Engineer role is part of the Road and Traffic Engineering Branch. The Branch is centre of technical expertise in road design, traffic engineering and traffic management. Our team are involved in the development and maintenance of a wide range of standards and guidelines, as well as undertaking concept and preliminary designs and providing advice on complex road engineering matters. The Branch also carries out design reviews on most of Main Roads projects.
The Traffic Engineer is responsible for contributing to the development and motoring of technical standards and guidelines in the field of traffic engineering and providing support in this field to internal staff and consultants.
This role assists the Senior Traffic Engineer and also investigates potential intersection treatments using specialist software and undertakes traffic studies including as part of a design team.
The successful applicant will demonstrate experience and competency across the following duties;
- Development and monitoring of technical standards and guidelines in the field of traffic engineering
- Providing technical support in the field of traffic engineering to internal staff and consultants
- Participating in the review and audit of consultant designs
- Undertaking designs of traffic engineering elements as part of a design team
- Investigating potential intersection treatments using specialist software
- Undertaking Road Safety Audits
- Providing traffic engineering input into relevant sections of tender specifications
- Undertaking traffic studies
- Reviewing new traffic related products for approval.

Applicants are requested to submit a comprehensive CV demonstrating their relevant skills and abilities within the context of the Job Role Statement as well as a copy of your Degree in Engineering.
Please also submit a statement outlining your considerable skill, knowledge and experience in the following three (3) criteria in no more than three (3) pages.
- Traffic engineering standards, products, practices and processes
- Use of traffic analysis software
- Research, analysis and problem solving
Applicants who do not submit a copy of their Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and are assessed as not meeting the first two (2) selection criteria will not be assessed further.
All selection criteria listed in the Job Role Statement will be tested throughout the selection process.
If your Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering was not obtained in Australia, the Australian equivalent must be submitted in your application.
