The Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) is establishing a Pool of Technical Officers from entry level to senior (Level 1-5) and in various regional locations across the state. This is a career development opportunity for you to provide key support to innovative research projects. Positions are anticipated to arise in the Grains Research and Development Transformation directorate.
We are looking for people who can provide technical support in a research and development environment and observe and report on plants and environmental factors.
In particular we are seeking people with technical competence (from entry level to senior level) in one or more agri-business industry areas such as field experimentation (seeding, spraying, harvest), laboratory techniques (grain quality, microscopes, soil analysis), agricultural software and hardware skills (GPS, UAV’s (drones), yield mapping, data logging, electronics, robotics), plant breeding, plant pathology (plant and pest diseases), Glasshouse experiments (reticulation, breeding, pot preparation, spray cabinets).
Successful applicants to the Pool will have demonstrated workplace communication skills, computer literacy skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a multi-disciplined team environment.
Knowledge of /or experience in scientific methods and analytical procedures appropriate to agricultural research and development activities is essential.
An acceptable National Police Certificate (police clearance), or equivalent, may be required for identified positions. Important note: DAFWA is in the process of establishing a new Grains R&D entity to improve and support the Western Australian grains industry and grain growers through the development and delivery of science, technology and innovation focused at on-farm sustainability and productivity, that will deliver benefits to Western Australia.
Regional offices/research hubs will be in Northam, Esperance, Geraldton, Merredin and Albany, in addition to an office in the Perth metropolitan area.
Applicants for these advertised positions should note that it is anticipated that the projects mentioned in this advertisement may be transferred to the new Grains R&D entity and persons employed on this project will therefore be subject to DAFWA and WA State Government policies, procedures and legislation relating to the transfer of business to a private entity outside the public sector.

Level Ranges: We are seeking to fill positions that may arise across all levels. The level of appointment upon commencement will depend on qualifications, skills and/or experience.
Level 1 $23,869 – $57,376 pa (Provides supervised routine support)
Level 2 $59,172 - $64,256 pa (Provides unsupervised technical support)
Level 3 $67,896 - $73,717 pa (Provides experienced high level technical support under general direction)
Level 4 $76,452 - $80,797 pa (Provides high level support in a defined technical area)
Level 5 $85,047 - $93,994 pa (Provides high level support in a broad expertise area)
Pool: This pool will operate for a period of 12 months on completion of the review period. Applicants found suitable will be placed into a pool from which fixed-term or permanent appointments may be made, on a full time or part time basis, when similar or like vacancies arise across our department. If a fixed term appointment is made then consideration may then be given to offering a further term(s) or permanent appointment.
Location: It is anticipated vacancies will arise in locations such as Esperance, Katanning, Merredin, Geraldton, Wongan Hills and Northam. Other locations may be considered.
