The Role

The successful applicant will support the delivery of planned education programs and contribute to a supportive, inclusive learning environment. They will work effectively under limited supervision and collaborate within a team, providing feedback and consulting on matters within their area of responsibility. They will demonstrate discretion in problem solving, decision making, and the selection of methods to support educational outcomes in consultation with teachers or other professionals. They may supervise students independently in a range of settings, both within and outside the school.

The successful applicant will apply relevant skills, techniques, and knowledge gained through prior experience, on-the-job learning, or formal qualifications. They will facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, school staff, and hearing peers. Under limited guidance, they will interpret communication both in and outside the classroom using Auslan or other appropriate sign systems aligned with the student's preferred mode of communication.

They will also provide oral interpretation when students use sign language to participate in class discussions, group activities, or individual interactions. They will assist students in understanding educational content by supporting teacher-directed learning, such as explaining challenging vocabulary or clarifying instructions. They will also prepare for interpreting by reviewing relevant lesson materials in advance.

Where required, successful applicants may also undertake the general duties of a Level 1, 2 or 3 Education Assistant, particularly when the assigned student is absent or when agreed upon in consultation with the teacher and Principal. However, their primary responsibility remains the provision of sign language services to the student(s) they are appointed to support.

The Department acknowledges that Education Assistants - Auslan exercise discretion in the performance of their duties, particularly when dealing with sensitive or privileged information shared by students. Professional standards are to be maintained in all interactions, including communication with teachers and parents.
