About the Role

The successful applicant will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students, staff, parents and the broader community in the school's educational work of the school to ensure the school is culturally responsive.

Principals are responsible for being innovative and creative in establishing systems and structures to foster academic development and improve students' social and emotional development. They are also responsible for engaging a diverse school community in the school's educational programs.

Principals are committed to continuous school improvement and the development of the instructional program, particularly the pedagogy of beginning teachers. They also build networks with other agencies, including involvement in the West Kimberley Network, and services in the community to benefit school programs.

As Principal of Looma Remote Community School (RCS), you will manage and maintain education practises that ensure a comprehensive educational program for all students in this remote community. The school is part of the Kimberley Schools Project, which involves the four pillars of Targeted Teaching, Attendance, Community Engagement and Early Years. The 0-3 Kindi-Link program follows the 3A Principles, aligned with the Kimberley Schools Project as well as Literacy intervention programs across all phases of learning. In the senior school, the focus is on work readiness and VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs.

Additionally, Looma RCS delivers best-practice education for students with special needs. The successful applicant will initiate and lead the review of school policies to support the inclusive engagement and full participation of students with disabilities, diagnosed or imputed, and ensure compliance with legislative and/or system policies.

The school places significant focus on ensuring the voice of Aboriginal parents is reflected in the actions, strategic directions of the parents and community members through a school community partnership. With over 95% of our student population and 50% of staff being of Aboriginal heritage, understanding the educational and social challenges of a remote setting and being able to work in a culturally responsive manner is essential to this role.  

The Principal will be required to continue with the Aboriginal workforce planning, which provides career and employment pathways for senior students and Looma community members. The school has a policy of ensuring all families and Language groups are represented on staff.

About Looma Remote Community School

The school is located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 130 km southeast of Derby, some 30 km (dirt road) south of the Derby to Fitzroy Crossing Highway. The school services the Looma Aboriginal Community (390-410 people) and the town of Camballin (30-40 people), approximately fifteen minutes from the school. Looma Community is built at the base of the picturesque Grant Range, and the school enjoys magnificent vistas of the surrounding hills and rock formations that give Looma its name.

Looma Community is relatively young, established in the 1970s, and has developed steadily in a short period of time. The population comprises of three major groups; Walmajarri, Nyikina, and Mangala.

The name 'Looma' is Walmajarri for 'blue tongue lizard'; and the lizard is the school and community logo. A traditional legend traces the history of a 'Looma,' which travelled from Christmas Creek with its children to escape a big flood.
