Appointment Pool

Ngaanyatjarra Lands School is seeking to establish a pool of team-oriented instructional leaders for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time Principal vacancies across our eight remote community schools, initially at our Jameson, Wanarn and Wingellina campuses. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements up until the end of Term 1, 2025.

About the Role

The campus Principal provides classroom support teaching part-time and oversees a rigorous and stimulating learning program based on the school’s endorsed curriculum, with a particular focus on the promotion of linking the local context and held understandings to the content being taught from the WA Curriculum. To this end, we are seeking campus leaders who will actively support the directions of the school with the central ethos of targeted learning and the development of expertise within two-way teaching teams. Two-way teaching and learning includes the Two-Way Science program and the ability to lead the school and community in this learning area is essential. The focus for secondary education is based on Big Picture Education which incorporates a student-focussed approach and requires an informed and creative leader who actively seeks opportunities for students and collaboration with community agencies.

The campus Principal will be expected to have cross-cultural skills that enable them to interact respectfully with students, parents/carers and community members in order to make them feel welcome, consolidate a sense of cultural safety, personal well-being and meaningful teaching and learning. They will develop a shared responsibility for the engagement and regular participation of their students.

As a highly professional educator, suitable applicants will have much to offer to the stakeholders with whom they interact but should also assume that they will need the capacity to be flexible and to learn new skills in an environment that is possibly unfamiliar to them. This will involve actively participating in their community and developing an understanding and appreciation of a language and culture quite different from their own.

Suitable applicants will form part of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands School’s leadership team and assist in the development of the school’s vision and strategic direction, along with developing campus-based operational plans to ensure the local implementation of the school’s key strategies. This includes embedding the values and actions of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework across all aspects of school management, teaching and learning. They will be the campus site manager and will have responsibility for the effective and efficient performance of the campus operations.

Besides being a member of a team – the school leadership team – the campus Principal is also the leader of a campus-based team and will need highly developed interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Life for teachers in remote communities can be challenging and the campus Principal has to ensure that support is provided to teachers that enable them to grow and develop professionally. The campus Principal will also have responsibility for engaging and supporting local Aboriginal Yarnangu staff who have the desire and capacity to work in the school. Developing and consolidating authentic relationships with Yarnangu people and facilitating their contribution and leadership within the school is imperative.

The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
