As the HOLA – Design and Technology, you will work with an outstanding and collegiate team to develop a culture of high quality teaching practices in the Design and Technology learning area. You will evaluate teaching practice effectiveness, develop a high performing and collegiate team, and manage a significant budget. Through embedding our Hedland Instructional Model, the applicant will create authentic learning environments which cater to student diversity, interests and needs.

The Role
The Head of Learning Area (HoLA) – Design and Technology role provides a unique opportunity for a future focused and inspiring leader. Hedland SHS, located in the heart of the Pilbara region has extensive links with all major local industries, including but not limited to mining, construction, engineering and government services. Hosting the largest VET program in the state, our students are presented with extensive opportunities to equip themselves with the practical skills required to support our major industries. Our state-of-the-art Trade Training Centre provides the ideal learning environment, with a specialised focus on building and construction and rail infrastructure.
As a highly accomplished leader, the applicant will support learning area staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students. We are looking for a future thinker, someone who can build upon our existing course offering, and build capacity to meet the needs of our 21st Century learners by preparing them for real-world futures in Design and Technology.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has an in-depth knowledge of Senior Secondary schooling. It is crucial that the successful applicant also has a strong understanding of the School Curriculum & Standards Authority (SCSA) requirements, University and TAFE requirements, industry pathways and Departmental systems and policies.
We are looking for someone who has experience in managing a substantial budget and has contemporary knowledge of industry standard technology to support the continued development of our already outstanding Trade Training Centre. They will enjoy working collaboratively with the experienced Technologies team in developing the Design and Technology curricula, modern classroom practices and implementing state of the art technology to provide authentic and relevant learning experiences for students.
The successful applicant will be an integral member of the Senior Leadership Team and will share a collaborative and committed approach towards whole school strategic planning that positively impact on the school’s vision and direction and student outcomes.
We are seeking a dynamic, highly competent and enthusiastic HoLA – Design and Technology. Applicants with an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Technologies curriculum and the experience and ability to teach courses across Years 7-12 are encouraged to apply.
You will continue to build and develop the technologies learning area, developing a culture of high-quality teaching and learning. You will lead the implementation of a coherent curriculum, instruction and assessment in line with our school mission, vision and values. The HoLA – Design and Technology maintains high expectations for student learning, promotes academic success, love of learning and healthy sense of self. You will promote effective, responsive pedagogy appropriate to children’s learning and development needs.

Teachers and School Administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10 000.00 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
