The Teaching Quality and Innovation Directorate leads the services and supports that enable improved teaching practice in every classroom. We lead the development and implementation of Teaching for Impact to promote and enable high impact teaching in classrooms across the state. Through a system-wide model of profession-led support, including coaching, we build teacher capacity to implement the evidence-based practice in Teaching for Impact.
The Directorate includes 2 branches, Quality Teaching and Curriculum Priorities. Quality Teaching is seeking a highly motivated Principal Education Officer to join their friendly team and lead the Graduate Teacher Induction Program. This Program supports early career teachers through on-going professional learning and individualised in-class coaching.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the advertised vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this process may be considered for other Principal Education Officer vacancies that may occur throughout our Directorate for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

The Role and our Branch
Quality Teaching develops the strategies, tools and supports to build effective teaching practices across the public school system. Our branch delivers evidence-based models of professional support for schools built on data and research, and informs and contributes to system, state and national quality teaching initiatives. The branch leads the Department’s implementation of the Quality Teaching Strategy’s Teaching for Impact.
Curriculum Priorities provides advice to schools and the system, and leads the development of strategies, professional learning, resources and tools that strengthen the capability of public schools and the profession.
The Principal Education Officer leading the Graduate Teacher Induction Program should ideally have:
- substantial knowledge and understanding of effective, evidence-based teaching and learning practices
- the ability to lead, develop and deliver professional learning
- the ability to lead a team of highly effective teachers
- substantial coaching knowledge
- outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- project management experience
- flexibility, responsiveness, and attention to detail to support and deliver operational and strategic directions.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment and every 3 years thereafter
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check if required.
The Department applies a 4 day breach period to this selection process.
