West Greenwood Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs (EASN) for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, suitable applicants will, under general supervision and guidance, perform tasks that require discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes determined by the teacher. You should apply techniques, skills and knowledge of relevant principles and practices acquired through previous experience, on the job learning or relevant qualifications. EASN’s at West Greenwood PS may work across several year levels supporting numerous students with disabilities including but not limited to Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Autism, Hearing Impaired as well as supporting the mental health needs of students.

Suitable applicants should work collaboratively with the teaching staff to implement individual and group documented plans prepared by the teacher, and will be responsible for modifying resources to meet the specific needs of the students. You will collect data on student achievement, and behaviour in accordance with the documented plans and report their findings to the teacher. In some cases you may be required to be part of case conferences with the school psychologist, therapists, teachers and parents.

You will ideally be an effective team player with highly developed communication skills and will work under teacher guidance to implement specialised education programs. You should have excellent time management skills and be able to work with a variety of teachers and students throughout the day.

West Greenwood PS is seeking Special Needs EAs who are skilled in the preparation of the learning environment and learning tasks. You will have a commitment to managing the academic, pastoral and social needs of our students to help create and maintain a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students. To be effective in this position you will be confident using computers and information technologies and have sound knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of disabilities.

We currently cater to 460 Kindergarten to Year 6 students taught by well-qualified, experienced and dedicated teachers working in partnership with parents to ensure the needs of every child are met.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
