Harvey Primary School (PS) is seeking a hardworking Gardener – Handyperson to join their team.

About the Role

The successful applicant will work to provide gardening, grounds and facility management to ensure a safe and clean school environment. They will maintain and present the school grounds and gardens in an attractive, clean, and tidy condition, and provide a suitable growing environment for both soft and hard landscaping, including turf management.

We are seeking applicants with effective communication skills to help develop and maintain good working relationships with school staff and external stakeholders concerning school grounds maintenance. The Gardener-Handyperson will be expected to work alongside our cleaners. To be successful in this role you will ideally be confident in performing minor repairs and have a sound knowledge of safe work practices to carry out your duties.

Harvey PS is located in the irrigation district of the South West of Western Australia. It has a student population of 300 including many with an Italian heritage and an increasing cohort from Asian countries. Harvey Primary School is committed to establishing a community in which everybody feels valued and where individual differences are appreciated and accepted. Eligibility and Training requirements  

Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

And complete the Department’s:

  • Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
  • Induction program within three months of commencement
  • Introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
  • Training specific to this role required by Departmental policy and;
  • Training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
