The program will be delivered off-site and is well supported by Belmont City College, the City of Belmont and a number of external agencies.
The Positive Engagement Program will deliver specialised activities and learning programs that build students’ academic skills, social skills and self-regulation using a strengths-based approach. An emphasis will be placed on individual education plans, personal learning projects, social and emotional education, life skills and embedded literacy and numeracy remediation, as required by each individual student.
The successful applicant will ideally have a growth mindset and a strong sense of social justice as well as being committed to supporting young people to overcome barriers to their education and personal development. They should display exemplary teaching practices, communication skills, teamwork and the ability to build rapport with diverse groups of young people in educational settings. The successful applicant should display the capacity to build positive relationships with students, their families and other stakeholders involved in supporting students.
Experience working in alternative education settings is desirable, as is knowledge and/or experience of trauma-informed practice, therapeutic crisis intervention in schools, functional behavioural assessment, classroom management strategies and the positive behaviour support framework. A capacity and willingness to participate in targeted professional development in areas such as these will be highly regarded.
The successful applicant will need to display the ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams. The Positive Engagement Program teacher will be collaboratively supported by the Belmont City College Student Services team, YMCA Base@Belmont youth workers and community agencies. A capacity to forge strong working relationships in diverse environments will be viewed favourably, as will the ability to draw on a range of community resources and agencies to support student outcomes.
