Exciting opportunity to lead our Health and Physical Education team in Western Australia’s beautiful Pilbara region.
Teachers and School Administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

About the role
We are seeking a dynamic, highly competent, and enthusiastic HoLA of HPE. Applicants with an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum and the experience and ability to teach courses across Years 7-12 are encouraged to apply.
As Head of Learning Area (HoLA) you will continue to build and develop the HPE learning area, developing a culture of high-quality teaching and learning. You will lead the implementation of a coherent curriculum, instruction, and assessment in line with our school Business Plan, vision and values. The HoLA HPE maintains high expectations for student learning, promotes academic success, love of learning and healthy sense of self. You will promote effective, responsive pedagogy appropriate to children’s learning and developmental needs.
The HoLA HPE leads the development of instructional practice that is intellectually challenging, authentic to student experiences, recognises student strengths, is differentiated and personalised. You ensure students are engaged in using technology effectively, employ valid and appropriate assessments and lead the use of assessment data appropriately to monitor and improve student learning.
As Head of Learning Area (HoLA) you will build and maintain a positive, engaging, safe, caring, and healthy environment that meets the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of each student. You will ensure each student is known, accepted, valued, trusted, respected, catered for and encouraged to be active and responsible in the school community.
You will have high standards of professionalism and will embrace opportunities for collaboration within the school community, the wider thriving Sporting community in Hedland, and across networks. As we continue to broaden our HPE courses into Senior School, you will also oversee planning, development and implementation of School and Curriculum Standards Authority Courses, Vocational Education and Training Programs and Endorsed Programs, as applicable. You will ensure all staff are suitably qualified and re-qualified according to the course needs.
The successful applicant will be an integral member of the school leadership team and will share a commitment towards whole school planning and review processes that positively impact on the school’s directions.

The HoLA HPE is an experienced and dedicated teacher and leader of Health and Physical Education. You will promote integrity, fairness, transparency, trust, collaboration, perseverance, learning and continuous improvement. You act ethically and morally in your personal conduct, relationships, decision-making, allocating resources and leadership. You have a proven track record of creating a cohesive and strong team that is dedicated to building on one another’s strengths to improve outcomes for all. Your outstanding interpersonal skills enables you to develop strong partnerships with parents and caregivers to promote school improvement and student learning.
As HoLA HPE you lead a focus on students and are accountable for their learning outcomes. You ensure fair, respectful, and culturally appropriate relationships are built with students in interactions, decision-making and practice. You recognise and leverage student diversity in teaching and learning and promote democracy, individual freedom and responsibility, equity, social justice, community.
As an expert practitioner, you can manage and monitor operations and administrative systems, strategically manage staff resources and scheduling to optimise our professional capacity. You are autonomous and seek, acquire, and manage fiscal, physical, and other resources with the student’s needs at the centre of all decision-making.
We will consider an internal secondment opportunity for permanent teachers in other locations within the Department of Education who would like to work at our school for up to three years and retain their substantive position. Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia.
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment.
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
