Ngaanyatjarra Lands School is seeking to establish a pool of team-oriented instructional leaders for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year, up until the end of Term 2, 2024 to fill the role of Principal across our eight remote community schools, initially at our Blackstone, Jameson and Wanarn campuses, but being considered for other principal roles as they become available over the semester. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements up until the end of Term 2, 2024
About the Role
The campus Principal position requires the successful applicants to provide classroom support and to oversee a rigorous and stimulating learning program based on the school’s endorsed curriculum - with a particular focus on the promotion of linking the local context to the content being taught from the WA Curriculum.
The campus Principal will be expected to have cross-cultural skills that enable them to interact respectfully with students, parents/carers and community members in order to consolidate a sense of cultural safety, personal well-being and meaningful teaching and learning. The campus Principal will develop a shared responsibility for the engagement and regular participation of their students.
As a highly professional educator, successful applicants will have much to offer to the stakeholders with whom they interact but should also assume that they will need the capacity to be flexible and to learn new skills in an environment that is possibly unfamiliar to them. This will involve actively participating in their community and developing an understanding and appreciation of a language and culture quite different from their own.
The successful applicants will form part of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands School’s leadership team and assist in the development of the school’s vision and strategic direction, along with developing campus-based operational plans to ensure the local implementation of the school’s key strategies. The person will be the campus site manager and will have responsibility for the effective and efficient performance of the campus operations.
Besides being a member of a team – the school leadership team – the campus Principal is also the leader of a campus-based team and will need highly developed interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Life for teachers in remote communities can be challenging and the campus Principal has to ensure that support is provided to teachers that enable them to grow and develop professionally. The campus Principal will also have responsibility for engaging and supporting local Aboriginal staff who have the desire and capacity to work in the school. Developing and consolidating authentic relationships with Ngaanyatjarra people and facilitating their contribution and leadership within the school is imperative.

The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
The Ngaanyatjarra Lands School is a remote multi-campus Kindergarten to Year 12 School catering for students in eight communities who form part of the Western Desert Cultural Bloc. The communities occupy a vast region in Western Australia west of the tri-state border.

Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation Course;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
The Department applies a 4 day breach period to this selection process.
