Appointment Pool
Safety Bay Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Gardeners/Handypersons for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 4, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 4, 2024.

As a Gardener you would provide gardening, grounds, and facility management support to ensure a safe and clean school environment. Suitable applicants would maintain and present the school grounds and gardens in an attractive, clean, and tidy condition, and provide a suitable growing environment for both soft and hard landscaping, including turf management. Part of your duties would be to perform minor repairs and maintenance as requested, as well as other Gardener duties in accordance with the Department’s policies and guidelines.
Suitable applicants will ideally possess good interpersonal skills, along with the ability to receive and carry out instructions as required. Tools and horticultural equipment maintenance in a serviceable condition and provides advice and support to the Principal on school grounds maintenance is important.
Safety Bay PS is located within the City of Rockingham, approximately 45 km south of Perth. It has been rebuilt from the original site into a well-planned and resourced school which accommodates a growing population, sitting at over 600 students.
The school provides a balanced curriculum that maximises the capacity of all students to reach their potential and challenges individuals to set high expectations for learning. Curriculum delivery across the school focuses on developing the knowledge and skills to enable students to be effective learners. Collaborative teaching teams and distributed leadership structures allow the school to be adaptive and reflective by ensuring learning programs are meeting the needs of students.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Sound communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in maintaining grounds and gardens, including turf management.
- Experience in minor servicing of horticultural/gardening equipment and performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of gardening methods and procedures, including the safe use and storage of gardening equipment, materials and chemicals.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
And complete the Department’s:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement
- induction program within three months of commencement
- introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
- training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
