Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dynamic and passionate Head of Department - English to join their high-quality regional school.
Teachers and School Administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2023 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

We are seeking a dynamic, highly competent and enthusiastic Head of Department - English. Your excellent interpersonal and organisational skills will enable you to provide effective and distributed leadership within your learning area. You should be committed to promoting and fostering academic aspiration and engagement, in an environment where achievement is celebrated. This position provides a unique opportunity to continue to build and develop the English team, and we are therefore seeking applicants that possess the personal qualities to foster a collaborative and positive culture.
As Head of Department - English you should model innovative, solutions-focused, and evidence-based thinking and have an excellent understanding of data analysis to improve learning for all students. Working collaboratively with your team you will have an opportunity to implement whole school policies, processes, and procedures, embedding a culture of professional leadership, trust, and ongoing improvement for all our students and staff.
As Head of Department - English you can demonstrate evidence of your high standards of professionalism and will embrace opportunities for collaboration within the school community and across networks. You will support the development of modern classroom practices and provide leadership to staff, utilising technology to provide authentic and relevant learning experiences for students. You should also possess a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements for year 7 to 12 and have the ability to lead a dynamic team in the planning, development and delivery to meet school and system requirements.
The successful applicant will ideally be committed to setting standards of excellence in teaching and instil a culture of self-reflection which fosters professional growth and results in outcomes focussed teams. Through the provision of regular and effective feedback, you should review and implement professional learning opportunities that are aligned with learning area planning and school priorities. This will support staff to create learning environments that maximise the opportunities for students to achieve personal success.
The successful applicant will be an integral member of the school leadership team and will share a commitment towards whole school planning and review processes that positively impact on the school’s directions.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY

TRAINING
