Teachers and school administrators employed at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School in 2023 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure).  Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year.  Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School (CHS) are seeking a dedicated and energetic individual to join their friendly team in the role of Head of Department – Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS.)

About the Role

We are seeking to fill the position of Head of Department (HOD) - HASS with a leader who possesses the experience, dedication and drive to maintain a culture of excellence in teaching and learning in the HASS learning area.

The HOD takes responsibility for the provision of curriculum leadership and management of the HASS teaching team. You will ideally be an expert classroom practitioner, possessing passion for the subject and the capacity to nurture a culture of excellence in teaching that supports the learning needs of all students.

The successful applicant will ideally have leadership experience and the professional knowledge to lead the HASS team and curriculum delivery from Years 7 to 12. Experience in teaching and leading others in the delivery of Year 11 and 12 courses will be highly desirable. The successful applicant will be a key member of the school leadership team. You should share a commitment to whole school planning and review processes and contribute to decision-making regarding the school’s operation. School leaders should embrace the school vision and actively promote initiatives focussed on student engagement, student performance and quality teaching.

Our School

Kalgoorlie-Boulder CHS was opened in 2006 and proudly offers secondary courses from Years 7 to 10. The school prides itself on an enrolment of over 900 students from a diverse range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, who all contribute to a vibrant and collaborative school culture.

Specialist programs are offered through the school, which celebrates diversity and innovation. These range from the Clontarf and Stars Academies, to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) groups, to the football and netball programs. In the spirit of innovation, Kalgoorlie-Boulder CHS has been selected as the first WA school to be part of the State Government's Virtual Power Plant pilot, which will not only help to teach students about the benefits of renewable energy and new technologies, but also reduce the environmental impact of power consumption within the Goldfields region.

The Location and Community

Just 5 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie, Boulder is accessible by air, road, rail, or guided tour from Perth. Flights and TransWA trains depart daily or hit the Great Eastern Highway for the 6.5-hour road trip from city to outback, stopping to ride one of Australia's biggest waves at Wave Rock.

Established during the 1880s, when thousands of starry-eyed prospectors made the journey east of Perth, Boulder was originally named after the Great Boulder Mine. The first mine on what's known as the Golden Mile was developed where Irishman Paddy Hannan struck gold and sparked the great gold rush of the 19th century.

  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
