The location and community
Karratha is an Aboriginal word meaning 'good country', and our city is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the Northwest. Nestled in Ngarluma Country, the city of Karratha is known as 'Munjaree' - the heart of the West Pilbara Coast - and its size and central location make it the ideal base for exploring the local environment and adventure destinations. Karratha is only a two hour flight or a 16 hour road trip from Perth.
Karratha is the gateway to the Dampier Archipelago’s 42 islands, with excellent fishing, snorkelling, whale watching and swimming opportunities all year round. We are a 5 hour drive to more snorkelling, whale shark experiences and camping at Coral Bay and/or Exmouth’s Ningaloo Reef. Karratha is surrounded by the National Parks of Karijni, Millstream-Chichester and Murajuga showcasing many breathtaking gorges, waterholes and the world's most prolific and oldest sites of Aboriginal rock art. It's also one of the few locations in WA where you can witness the Staircase to the Moon.
