About the Role
The Head of Learning Area – English, as a member of the Senior Leadership Group, will work collaboratively with the Principal and other members of the school administration team to provide educational leadership in the school and community by developing and promoting the school vision as articulated in the current Business Plan. As a key school leader, you will facilitate positive, quality teaching supporting learning outcomes in English. You will do this through the effective modelling of excellent classroom practice while promoting a culture of success supported by performance management and a range of collegiate opportunities. An important aspect of this position is the continued development of our Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses in English Literature and English, supporting lower school pathways through our Mathematics and Philosophy Specialist program students along with Extension Program students as a specific lower school pathway into ATAR.
The successful applicant for this position will be responsible for curriculum development and contemporary lesson delivery within the English Learning Area as well as managing the professional development of teaching staff. You should be committed to effectively leading a Professional Learning Community within the English Learning Area by engaging in innovative practices and to contribute to strategic planning within the Learning Area.
Australind SHS recognises that students have different interests and abilities and is able to cater for diverse student needs by providing relevant and engaging programs across contexts. A broad curriculum is offered which includes specialist electives that are mapped in Lower School to assist students into strong Senior School pathways of interest leading to ATAR while also supporting students in the Curtin University UniReady program on site, General Courses, Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways. The school is also a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Experience with using data to inform planning linked to student performance and learning area review across Year 7 to Year 12 is important in this role as is the interrogation of NAPLAN and OLNA data performance data. Planning for appropriate intervention programs. Understanding student on-entry transition data linked to the Leschenault Alliance of Public Schools. Knowledge of SEN (Special Educational Needs) planning and reporting will also be desirable.
Ideally the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills along with an environment of active and positive learning within their own classroom. A collaborative approach in supporting classroom teachers to successfully engage students with identified literacy difficulties is highly regarded. The successful applicant will illustrate their use of differentiated teaching practices within the classroom and skills and strategies that support students to access relevant curriculum requirements as part of a whole of school approach.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
