Kelmscott Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a highly motivated, energetic and innovative Head of Learning Area (HOLA) - Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) to provide exemplary team leadership to maximise outcomes for students.
The successful applicant will ideally provide purposeful and focused leadership for the HASS team as well as establish accountability for the effective daily management of the leaning area. With the ability to lead change and innovation, the HOLA of HASS will use evidence-based data to inform all decision making.
As the successful applicant, you will use your highly developed interpersonal skills to continually drive improvement by providing effective proactive leadership that is strategic, inspiring and supportive. In this role, you will be leading your team to analyse performance data related to the HASS learning area for all phases of schooling. You should successfully utilise documented planning at learning area and classroom levels that are based on data analysis; teacher self-reflection; and the school’s and learning area priorities.
The successful applicant will also be responsible for leading the team’s implementation of contemporary pedagogical approaches that address the school’s Teaching and Learning Framework though actioning high impact teaching strategies (HITS). You will provide expert curriculum guidance and ensure that all teachers are delivering quality teaching and learning programs that meet the individual needs of students. As an instructional leader, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate strong professional knowledge to lead quality curriculum differentiation and the building of safe and inclusive classrooms. Applicants should have a well developed understanding and application of the HASS curriculum and SCSA requirements for lower and senior secondary courses. The successful applicant should have current experience in the planning, development and delivery of HASS-based Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses.
The successful applicant will ideally support staff as individuals and as a team to ensure that all are professionally accountable for not only their day-to-day work, but also for the implementation of learning area priorities. A key requirement of the position is to lead the HASS team in their understanding and implementation of the school’s Business Plan. By undertaking supportive performance management processes, the HOLA of HASS will ideally possess experience in leading reflective performance development discussions with staff, based on a comprehensive knowledge of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This will be through coaching, classroom observation and peer reviews so that all HASS teachers are engaged in self-reflection; giving and receiving feedback; data analysis; and ongoing review of formative and summative assessment practices.
As a member of the School Leadership Team, the successful applicant will lead by example modelling high aspirations and expectations of staff and students. As a highly visible leader, you should demonstrate a growth mindset and a love of learning. Knowledge and successful implementation of highly effective classroom management strategies, trauma-informed practice and restorative practices will be regarded favourably.
As HOLA of HASS, you will play a significant role in marketing the school to the wider community by leading initiatives and the successful achievements of students through systemic priorities. Highly developed public relations skills and the ability to effectively liaise with a variety of stakeholders that value-add to students’ outcomes are desirable attributes for the advertised role.
Kelmscott SHS is a school of opportunity for students offering Department of Education endorsed Specialist Programs in Agriculture and Music, Gifted & Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program and a range of Kelmscott Extension Programs (KEP) in Mathematics, Science, English and Humanities & Social Sciences. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
