Independent Public School - Southwest Education Region
WA College Of Agriculture - Denmark
Kitchen Hand - Second Cook
00041951
Level 2, $975.50 - $993.10 per week (AWU (WAPS) GA 2019)

Advertised Vacancy Number: IPS/SS714366

This is a permanent part-time (0.77FTE) position commencing Term 1, 2022

Are you looking for a change? Then look no further! WA College of Agriculture – Denmark is seeking an enthusiastic Second Cook to join their dynamic team.

WA College of Agriculture – Denmark (the college) is seeking a suitably experienced friendly and dynamic individual to join their high volume environment as Second Cook.

In this new position, the Second Cook will be responsible for ensuring a high level of quality control, storage and hygiene is maintained according to occupational safety and health standards and requirements.

The Second Cook will also manage a team of Level 1 Domestic staff (catering duties) in day-to-day operations when working shifts in the absence of the Chef and the First Cook.

The Second Cook assists the Chef and the First Cook in meeting the catering requirements of the College and external groups and caters for special occasions and functions as required. This involves preparation, cooking and stock control.

Our commercial kitchen provides high quality and nutritious meals in large volumes, daily. This includes three (3) main meals and other light meals for up to 190 students and staff 7 days per week during school terms. The College occasionally hosts functions on site and provides catering through the College kitchen.

Our College has an established history in providing strong outcomes for its students. Our educational program is balanced and provides a mix of hands-on practical work complemented by supporting knowledge provided in a classroom environment.

Our College is unique in that it offers accredited industry training alongside secondary education. As well as Certificates in Agriculture and related trades, the College offers a variety of accredited short courses for study each year. Students attend shows such as the Perth Royal Show; Albany Agricultural Show and Wagin Woolarama.

There are regular camps and excursions providing real-life experiences for our students. Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) completion rates are high, with a vast majority of students transitioning successfully to further education and/or employment.

While the majority of students are residential, there are an increasing number of day students and a bus service is provided direct to the College from Albany.

From its early beginnings in 1942 on the site of the current campus, our College has evolved considerably and moved to its present purpose-built facility in 1999, with a capacity of around 140 students.

The College, residence and farm all work together to ensure that, along with learning and achievement, student safety and care is of paramount importance. We provide a home away from home for many of our students and we take on the responsibility of training young people in the 'real world' environment of a commercial farm with all of its inherent risks.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Experience in a commercial cooking environment and demonstrated ability to assist in the preparation of meals for approximately 100 people.
  • Ability to assist in the instruction and supervision of catering staff.
  • Ability to recognise and interpret Safety Data Sheets, equipment operating instructions, safety instructions and training guidelines.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment to a busy schedule.

Applications will be assessed against these work related (selection criteria) of the position. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.

The Department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and persons from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.
