The Role and our Branch
The Deputy Director General, Schools portfolio develops the overall strategic directions for promoting and developing public schools in Western Australia. We are looking for a dynamic individual with high levels of personal acumen, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with regions and schools and harness the expertise of others.

You will be involved in system-wide educational projects, initiatives, strategies and reforms being undertaken within the Department, supporting continuous improvement opportunities and effective risk management. Excellent written skills will be required, as you will prepare high-level briefing notes, reports, research and discussion papers for presentation to senior management and the Minister’s Office.
Although the position does not require a technical expert skill set, you will need a broad system perspective, with the ability to be agile and responsive to the needs of the role and competing priorities. The position requires an excellent understanding of Government priorities, election commitments and interface with policy for the operational aspects of schools, while also being dynamic and professional to represent the Deputy Director General - Schools on particular working groups.

Selection Criteria
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
- Highly developed written communication skills, including extensive experience in the preparation of correspondence, reports, Ministerials and briefing notes.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships and networks, including experience in undertaking high-level consultations, collaborations and negotiations.
- Sound understanding of and sensitivity to the strategic requirements and direction of the Government and knowledge of Western Australia’s educational system, operations at a central, regional and school level.
- Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills and experience in developing options, applying strategic thinking to achieve outcomes and implement effective change management strategies.
- Highly developed organisational skills with a proven ability to deliver outcomes on schedule in a demanding environment and under tight timeframes.
- High-level project and program management skills, including ability to implement processes to facilitate monitoring, reporting and successful delivery.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
- complete
- the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
