The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) is seeking to appoint a School Psychologist to join the dynamic and motivated team at the Seville Drive Engagement Centre, located on site at Cecil Andrews College in Armadale, and supporting schools in the South Metropolitan Education Region.

SSEN: BE provides support for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours and consists of 13 Engagement Centres across the state as well as a small, specialised learning academy in Midland. The SSEN: BE School Psychologist is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team staffing the Engagement Centres.  Professional leadership and support to the SSEN: BE School Psychology team is provided by SSEN: BE Lead School Psychologists.  The Engagement Centres forward the vision and strategic direction of the SSEN: BE, with administration of the school based at the Statewide Services Centre, Padbury.

The SSEN: BE School Psychologist will develop, implement and report on individual interventions for Kindergarten to Year 12 students and support schools to maintain safe and supportive learning environments. The SSEN:BE School Psychologist will confidently provide psychological assessment and consultancy services to school and Engagement Centre staff and establish and maintain effective working relationships to improve student behaviour and engagement. Collaboration with School Psychologists, Lead School Psychologists and other specialist teams within and external to the Department will be a key feature of the role, to assist with the integration and coordination of relevant student support services.

As the successful applicant, you will ideally have well developed interpersonal and communication skills and experience in the area of student behaviour and engagement. As this position requires the ability to work independently as a psychologist and is of a more specialist nature, you will ideally possess general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. As part of this role the successful applicant may be required to travel across different sites.

Applicants interested in this position whose availability is less than 1.0 FTE are encouraged to apply, as the vacancy may be filled by more than one suitable person prepared to work collaboratively.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  1. Ability to implement school psychology services and programs in an educational environment to maximise student learning outcomes.
  2. Knowledge of the implementation and evaluation of a variety of psychological approaches appropriate for individual, group and system-level intervention.
  3. High level written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across the lifespan, Department personnel and inter-agency partners across a variety of contexts.
  5. Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.

  • hold or be eligible for general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia; or
  • hold or be eligible for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia with:
    • an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited 5th year qualification in psychology; or
    • an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited 4th year qualification and a recognised qualification in teaching (or Graduate Diploma in School Psychology)
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
