Broome Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a professional and committed educator to take on the role of Program Coordinator (PC) – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education from the commencement of the 2022 school year.

The Broome SHS vision is to realise the potential of every student to achieve personal excellence in all endeavours. We do this by providing a safe and caring learning environment with a focus on excellence, through high quality teaching and positive respectful relationships.

In collaboration with the Principal and members of the administrative team, the PC will provide educational leadership in the school and community by developing and promoting school Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education programs and encouraging staff and community members to share ownership of them. The successful applicant will ideally contribute to developing the School Plan and implementing the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework through participative decision making, including assisting in developing policy and establishing and maintaining systems.

The successful applicant will ideally be part of the Senior Leadership Team of Broome Senior High School and will support and line-manage the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer team. This role also has a 0.4FTE teaching component.

To be successful in this role, the ideal applicant will have strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to ensure effective delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education programs. They should possess the relevant knowledge and understanding of teaching practices to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Broome is a vibrant and attractive coastal town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. As a tourist town, Broome is well resourced regarding facilities and services. The school was the winner of the WA School of the Year for 2012 and is now one of the premier high schools in the State. A leading Independent Public School in its own right, the school is also proudly part of the Broome Cluster of Independent Public Schools working in close collaboration with the town’s four primaries: Broome, Broome North, Cable Beach and Roebuck primary schools. Applicants offered a position will be eligible for Government Regional Officer’s Housing (GROH) housing and assistance with the movement of furniture and vehicle to Broome.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Ability to provide strategic leadership, deal effectively with change and generate innovative solutions related to the effective delivery of education programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Extensive skills and experience in the development and implementation of learning programs and strategies at a school level.
  • Cultural knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Highly developed verbal and interpersonal communication skills at a school and community level, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
  • Well developed presentation skills, including experience in preparing reports

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
