Newton Moore Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool of Student Support Officers for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements with the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2022.

Student Support Officers have an important role in our school supporting students in a range of settings by providing information and assistance that contribute to the promotion of student welfare and improved educational outcomes. 

At Newton Moore SHS, Student Support Officers undertake some administrative duties and will be expected to work either with individual students or with groups of students. Suitable applicants will work in classrooms providing dedicated support to students with individual learning needs. You will assist students to access the curriculum, and if required, assist the teachers implement specialised education programs, operation of computers and digital technologies. You may also be required to provide feedback on education and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential in this role as you will deal with a wide diversity of people and you may deal with students who might be highly emotional or agitated.  In this role you will provide support and advice to teachers on strategies for supporting students and participate in group work processes. A Student Support Officer is required to maintain comprehensive records and adopt a collaborative and consultative approach at all times.

Allied professional staff at Newton Moore SHS make an important contribution to student progress and achievement through the support of school management, teaching practice and the maintenance of positive relationships with students, parents and the community at Newton Moore SHS.  Additionally, staff contribute to outcomes that align with the school vision, business plan and other operational targets by providing assistance to the teaching staff, student services and pastoral care team and school administration.

Newton Moore SHS is located in Bunbury, 175kms south of Perth. We have a strong commitment to offering innovative and best practice educational programs. The school delivers two Department of Education Approved Specialist Academic Programs: Science Horizons and Engineering Specialist.  Newton Moore SHS is also Teacher Development School (TDS) for secondary science and a Lead Language School and supports with training and assisting staff across the South West.  The school is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for Certificate II courses in Aquaculture and Workplace Skills.

Newton Moore SHS also provides enrichment through the following programs: Moore Academy of Sport and Health (MASH), Follow the Dream, Clontarf Football Academy and CALM Cadets.

ELIGIBILITY

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
