Appointment Pool
School of Special Education Needs: Sensory (SSEN: Sensory) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated and enthusiastic Education Assistants - Auslan for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2022.
The SSEN: S provides educational support for children with a hearing loss and/or vision impairment from birth to completion of school. SSEN: S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.
SSEN: S operates the Deaf Education and Vision Education programs to support eligible children, their schools and families. SSEN: S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, school psychologists, braille transcribers, captioner, Deaf education officers and educational interpreters.
SSEN: S supports young children from birth to completion of school at the SSEN: S Early Childhood Service (0-5 years) or in their local schools with Teacher of the Deaf support. Teachers of the Deaf deliver targeted learning programs based on the Expanded Core Curriculum including areas such as communication, audiology, assistive technology and self-advocacy.
Suitable applicants will work with children aged from 0 to 5 years old, and their families. The Education Assistant – Auslan will assist the teacher in delivering planned education programs and facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students, teachers, and other staff. Additionally, the role may involve interpreting for Deaf staff members in the workplace. Suitable applicants will also assist in supervising students, as well as participate in a team situation, and consult and provide feedback regarding students’ progress.
Suitable applicants will preferably have previous experience working with infants or young children and their families from the time of diagnosis, as well as working closely with those who are deaf or hard of hearing, including students and parents. As this position operates across the Early Childhood Service with facilities at Southwell Primary School and the Padbury Statewide Services Centre, the suitable applicants should have their own driver’s license to travel between sites.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
- Well-developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
