The Teaching and Learning Services Branch is seeking to appoint a highly dedicated and motivated individual to the role of Specialist Advisor.
The Department is developing a Future Skills and Pathways plan to ensure all students are provided with the attributes they require for purposeful engagement in lifelong learning, active citizenship and engagement with the labour market. The Future Skills and Pathways plan is comprised of five areas of work: Career development in schools; Embedding contemporary and future work capabilities; Building science, technology, engineering and mathematics capability; Establishing partnerships with employers, industry and training providers; and Vocational Education and Training. This is an exciting opening where you will have the opportunity to provide strategic leadership in progressing this work.
The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of public education and will use their school level expertise and knowledge of career development to inform and guide strategies to establish effective approaches to career development in schools. These approaches will build all students’ understanding of the world of work and develop the career management skills required to successfully transition to university, training or employment, and throughout their working lives. Highly developed skills in the development and delivery of successful professional learning will be essential and the capacity to develop online professional learning will be highly regarded.
An additional key element of the role will be to provide advice and direction to schools on ways to build connections and partnerships with business, industry and training providers that will provide all students with opportunities to participate in meaningful career education and work exploration activities and make well-informed decisions.
The successful applicant will lead a number of projects including the ongoing development of career development resources and teacher professional learning as well as partnerships with tertiary institutions that enable teachers to access high quality qualifications in Career Development.
Highly developed written communication skills are an essential requirement as the Specialist Advisor – Career Development will be responsible for leading the preparation of responses related to the work of the branch and selected projects. In addition, you will work as part of an integrated Teaching and Learning Services Directorate. As such, the successful applicant should be flexible, able to work both collaboratively and independently, and be able to contribute to the work of the branch in a range of areas.
The Future Skills and Pathways Team will work collaboratively with other branches and directorates as well as other Government agencies and industry to support successful outcomes for all students. The successful applicant will therefore possess highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to successfully undertake high-level consultations, collaborations and negotiations with stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes for all schools and students.
The Future Skills and Pathways Team will initially be part of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Project Team that is committed to providing support and services to public schools to assist them in the implementation of VET delivered to secondary school students; and to the development of a system-wide approach to school-industry partnerships.
The VET Project Team is also responsible for the provision of specialised services and support to schools to ensure every student:
- builds informed understandings of the world of work;
- has access to meaningful work placements, training and experiences;
- develops the career management skills to successfully transition from school to further education, training or employment; and
- builds the capabilities that will be required to manage ongoing employment and career transitions throughout their working lives.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of current trends, initiatives and reforms in education, student pathways and career development.
- Highly developed verbal and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to undertake high-level negotiations, consultations and collaborations.
- Highly developed written communication and presentation skills, including experience in the preparation of complex reports and presenting contentious information to a range of stakeholders.
- Extensive skills and experience in providing effective leadership in a diverse range of settings.
- Extensive skills and experience in the development and implementation of professional learning programs, projects or strategies at a school, region or system level.
- Highly developed conceptual, analytical and strategy formulation skills, including the ability to provide innovative, strategic solutions to complex problems.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
