The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) is seeking to appoint a fixed term, full-time (1.0 FTE) School Psychologist to join their dynamic and motivated team at the Heathridge Engagement Centre.  The Heathridge Engagement Centre is located on site at Eddystone Primary School and services schools in the North Metropolitan Education region.

SSEN: BE provides support for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours and consists of 13 engagement centres across the state and the Midland Learning Academy. Administration of the school is based at the Statewide Services Centre, Padbury. It is a multi-tiered service and includes a focus on professional learning for teachers to develop skills and knowledge in effective instructional practice and behaviour management.

As School Psychologist, you will develop, implement and report on individual interventions for Kindergarten to Year 12 students and support schools to maintain safe and supportive learning environments. You will confidently provide psychological assessment and consultancy services to school and engagement centre staff and establish and maintain effective working relationships to improve student behaviour and engagement. Collaboration with school psychologists, Lead School Psychologists and other specialist teams within and external to the Department will be a key feature of the role in order to assist with the integration and coordination of relevant student support services.

As the successful applicant, you will have well developed interpersonal and communication skills and experience in the area of student behaviour and engagement. As this position requires the ability to work independently as a psychologist, general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia is desirable.  A job share arrangement may be considered to fill this position. 

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  1. Ability to implement school psychology services and programs in an educational environment to maximise student learning outcomes;
  2. Knowledge of the implementation and evaluation of a variety of psychological approaches appropriate for individual, group and system-level intervention;
  3. High level written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills;
  4. Interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across the lifespan, Departmental personnel and interagency partners across a variety of contexts;
  5. Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
  • hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles provisional or general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA); and
    • hold a recognised qualification in teaching (minimum one year); or
    • hold a Graduate Diploma in School Psychology (or equivalent), or
    • have undertaken a minimum placement of 40 days in the school education sector as part of higher degree studies in psychology;

or

  • hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and have worked a minimum of three years full-time (or equivalent part-time) as a school psychologist (or equivalent position).

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
